ATAP’s Safety Mission and Vision

Protection of safety and health (of ourselves, colleagues, and the community) and environmental stewardship are foundational to how we work in ATAP. Our vision: pushing the state of the art in science and technology without anyone’s getting hurt.

Integrated Safety Management (ISM)

ISM is the set of guiding principles and core functions with which we achieve safety — not by luck, but by design. We encourage everyone to learn more about it and familiarize themselves with our ISM Plan.

ISM Guiding Principles

  • Line-management responsibility for safety
  • Clear roles and responsibilities
  • Competence commensurate with responsibilities
  • Balanced Priorities
  • Identification of ES&H standards and requirements
  • Hazard controls (including environmental controls) tailored to work being performed
  • Operations authorization

ISM Core Functions

Five Core Functions of integrated ES&H management underlie any work that could affect the public, the workers, and the environment:

  1. Define the Scope of Work
  2. Analyze the Hazards
  3. Develop and Implement Hazard Controls (including environmental controls)
  4. Perform Work within Control
  5. Provide Feedback and Continuous Improvement

If you see something (or need help), say something

Emergency: Call 911
(Examples: fire; serious injury; major chemical spill…) When calling 911 from your cell phone, emphasize that you are at LBNL, and give a building number if possible. If your workplace is away from our main site, give its street address.

Non-emergency safety and security matters
Call Site Security at extension 6999 (landline phones on main site) or 510.486-6999 to report non-emergency problems.

Exploring Further

To learn more about how we make our safety vision a reality, please explore our intramural-oriented pages. There you’ll find valuable information you can use both on the job and at home. We hope you’ll take the time to explore these resources, and i and one of the keys to implementing ISM at Berkeley Lab, our Work Planning and Control (WPC) system. We also have information especially for those new to the Lab, ATAP, or California.
