Safety is a core value of ATAP, and the division is committed to continuously improving safety by creating a safer and better workplace for all our staff. The division’s Integrated Safety Management (ISM) plan is the roadmap that guides our environment, safety, and health policies and practices.
At our All-to-All meeting held on July 24, 2023, ATAP’s Division Safety Coordinator Pat Thomas presented the five core functions of ISM depicted in the ISM Wheel, which are supported by the seven guiding principles of ISM.
The five core functions of ISM are:
- Define the Scope of Work
- Analyze the Hazards
- Develop and Implement Hazard Controls (including environmental controls)
- Perform Work within Control
- Provide Feedback and Continuous Improvement
The seven guiding principles are:
- Line Management Responsibility for Safety
- Line management models safe work behaviors and communicates safe work expectations to set up staff for success.
- Clear roles and responsibilities
- Everyone knows who is leading the work (Activity Lead) and their respective roles and responsibilities for the job at hand.
- Competence Commensurate with Responsibilities
- Management assigns work to staff with the experience, skills, and abilities to responsibly fulfill that task.
- Balanced Priorities
- Safety and environmental protections are resourced appropriately at all phases of a project.
- Identification of standards and requirements
- Before starting work, the hazards are evaluated, and there is agreement on the safety standards and requirements needed to plan and perform the work to protect staff and the environment.
- Hazard Controls are tailored to the work performed
- Safety and process controls are specific to the work conditions.
- Operations authorizations
- The conditions and requirements to be satisfied for operations to be initiated and conducted are clearly established and agreed upon.
