The Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics Division integrates the core values and stewardship principles of Berkeley Lab into our day-to-day operations. Our goal is to attract, engage with, and empower the brightest minds to advance DOE and Berkeley Lab’s vision and mission through scientific breakthroughs and groundbreaking innovations.
Our Core Values
The following core values guide the stewardship of our people, research, and resources:
Integrity, fulfilling our commitments with honesty, transparency, and accountability.
Trust of colleagues and the community earned by honest dealing and respectful behavior.
Respect based on regard for the people who make up our teams—and on caring for each other.
Collaboration that bridges gaps between disciplines and institutions to perform best our mission—a tradition of team science dating back to Laboratory founder E.O. Lawrence.
Service, the spirit in which we discover and innovate to further the Berkeley Lab and DOE missions and perform outreach efforts to prepare the next generation.
Innovation, transforming the unexplored into the understood and advancing new approaches and applications.
Safety, integrated throughout the planning and conduct of our research and operations to ensure the well-being of our people and the public.
Appreciation, recognizing the commitment and dedication of the people who support and advance scientific accomplishments.
Turning Strategic Goals into Actions:
The ATAP Stewardship Committee
The Committee meets monthly to develop innovative efforts that support a strong workforce by embedding our stewardship principles and practices in our actions and activities. The Committee’s objectives are to:
- Participate in Berkeley Lab Stewardship Office initiatives in support of the Lab’s strategic goals.
- Integrate core values into the Divisional dialogue via All-to-All meetings, newsletter, and discussions.
- Develop the current and future STEM workforce through education and outreach at the K-12, undergraduate, and graduate levels and via mentoring programs.
- Promote the ongoing integration of the Laboratory’s core values throughout our work processes.
- Ensure that safety is always the top priority in planning and performing experiments and operational activities.

Discussion topics reflect our core values throughout the dialogue and are incorporated into our monthly ATAP All-to-All meetings. The bimonthly ATAP Newsletter includes stewardship and core-values topics in every issue, and the messaging is amplified via social media.

The education and training of future scientists and engineers is essential to ATAP’s mission. We emphasize workforce development, which includes recruitment, retention, and mentoring across all levels, from undergraduate internships to graduate and postdoctoral research.

We engage in activities that promote a better understanding of the science and applications of particle accelerators and how our research benefits society. We show how careers in STEM are attainable and lay out pathways to opportunities at Berkeley Lab and the wider scientific community.

Safety is fundamental to ATAP’s mission, and we have successfully organized an annual Safety Day—now Multi-Lab Safety Week—since 2015. The agenda for the week includes seminars and workshops that focus on safety. This helps us incorporate our core values and stewardship principles in our work processes.
