Outreach and education have been essential components of our mission throughout ATAP’s history. They encompass efforts from K-12 through the graduate and postdoctoral levels and extend to workforce development for the accelerator community. These initiatives help develop the STEM workforce, support recruitment, and inform the community about the importance of science and the role played by Berkeley Lab. Here are some of our major, recurring efforts.

Researcher Jean-Francois Croteau points out features of a superconducting magnet to High School STEM Day students.

Working with Berkeley Lab’s K-12 office, we participate extensively in enrichment events that excite and inform the scientists of tomorrow. Examples include classroom lectures, guided facility tours, and STEM fairs.

BELLA Center Staff Scientist Tong Zhou mentors SULI student Michelle Hu in lab.

ATAP Outreach and Education efforts assist in recruiting students through programs such as DOE’s Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship, Community College Internship, and Office of Science Graduate Student Research programs.

Soren Prestemon teaches at US Particle Accelerator School.

ATAP researchers have a long-standing tradition of teaching at USPAS, which offers intensive short courses for graduate and undergraduate credit in accelerator science and technology.
