Matt earned a B.A. in cognitive neuroscience from Hampshire College in Massachusetts before returning to the Bay Area in 2023. He joined the Lab in April of this year and graciously agreed to discuss his role at Berkeley Lab and share some of his experience with those in similar positions.
Please tell us about the ATAP Operations Team and your role.
The Operations Team provides logistical support to ensure the division runs smoothly. This includes supporting the scientific teams with procurements, travel arrangements, setting up visitor and affiliate requests, events, stocking gowning rooms, and other administrative tasks. As a new addition to the ATAP team, I feel incredibly fortunate to work with such an excellent team of knowledgeable and effective administrators. In most previous jobs, I was a “department of one.” Being part of a team that actively supports one another and communicates regularly is a refreshing and welcome change of pace.
What do you most like about your role, and what are your day-to-day challenges?
My favorite part of the role is supporting the ongoing research at the Lab. I feel part of a large and complex ecosystem of engineers, scientists, postdocs, students, and support staff. Since the research done at the Lab impacts the whole world and is highly regarded, the opportunity to play a small part in making it happen feels very rewarding. While I may only understand some of the science, I enjoy learning from the researchers about their work. Plus, seeing the spectacular view from the Lab is the icing on the cake.
Regarding challenges, I like to see every item on my daily to-do list crossed off, so logging off at the end of the day can sometimes be difficult when a few tasks still need to be done.
What advice would you give to other people in roles like yours?
Communication with your coworkers and supervisors is key! Reach out if you feel overwhelmed by work or need advice. Take the time to find ways to ground yourself and treat everyone with respect and compassion. What resonated with me was the recognition that hard work and stress do not need to be tied together. You can do your best work without piling pressure on yourself. Maintain a good work-life balance, and try not to bring work home.
