Throughout February, we celebrate Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Black Inventors and Innovators,” with Berkeley Lab’s African American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) showcasing talks and events highlighting the important contributions that Black inventors have made to science and society and how their contributions have shaped history.

Speakers include the U.S. Department of Energy’s Director of the Office of Science, Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, the first Black woman to hold that position, as well as the Lab’s Theresa Triplett, Manager of the Office of Institutional Assurance and Integrity; Satya Gotcho a Gotcho, Physicist Project Scientist/Engineer in the Physics Division; Jonelle Basso, Biologist Research Scientist at the Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute; and James Lee, Computer Systems Engineer who leads the Computing Sciences IT group.

The celebrations kicked off on February 1, 2024, with an AAERG banner-raising event near the Blackberry Gate on site.
