There are several internship opportunities available for students: the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship, the Community College Internship, and the Office of Science Graduate Student Research programs. The programs are sponsored and managed by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE National Laboratories.
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI)
The SULI program encourages undergraduates from two- and four-year colleges, post-baccalaureates, and graduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math careers. Applications for the fall SULI program, which runs for 16 weeks from August through December, close at 5:00 pm Eastern Time on May 25, 2023.
This year’s SULI intern, Valerie Smykalov, will be mentored by Arun Persaud from the Fusion Sciences & Ion Beam Technology program from June through August.

The Community College Internship (CCI)
The CCI program aims to encourage community college students to enter technical careers by providing 10-week internships. Under the guidance of the Lab’s staff scientists or engineers, interns work on technologies, instrumentation projects, or major research facilities related to DOE’s ongoing research and development programs. Applications for the fall CCI program (which runs for 15 weeks from August through December) close at 5:00 pm Eastern Time on May 25, 2023.
Cindy (Johnny) Chinchilla Pinto, a CCI summer intern will be mentored by Jeroen van Tilborg from the BELLA Center from June through August.

Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program
The SCGSR program prepares doctoral students for career success in areas that support the U.S. Office of Science’s mission “to deliver scientific discoveries and tools that transform our understanding of nature, and to advance the country’s energy, economic, and national security.”
Students selected for the program spend three to 12 consecutive months performing research toward their theses at the Lab with a scientist from the U.S. Department of Energy. Applications. To assist applications with their submissions, which are due by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on May 3, 2023, a workshop titled “Q&A, Application and Proposal Guidance,” has been scheduled for 2:00-4:00 pm Eastern Time on April 20, 2023.
