Berkeley Lab’s K-12 team is looking for mentors to help the scientists and engineers of tomorrow get started. Volunteers from all divisions are welcome to apply.
Experiences in Research (summer 2023 internships)
The Experiences in Research program, hosted by Berkely Lab from June 20 – July 28, 2023, is a six-week, virtual and hybrid, project-based internship for high school students from the Bay Area. The program provides an opportunity for students to work alongside experts at the Lab.
The K-12 team is looking for projects/mentors from both STEM and STEM-adjacent fields (experimental, data science, coding, administration, science communication). Project descriptions for the summer 2022 program can be found here. Prospective mentors should submit their project proposals as soon as possible.
A recording and the slides of the December 8, 2022, informational seminar are available. For information on mentoring commitments and timelines for the program, click here.
Science en Acción (SeA) Bilingual STEM Camp
The K-12 team is also seeking volunteers for Science en Acción (SeA), a spring break camp running from April 5-8, 2023, for English learning/Spanish-English bilingual students who are interested in learning more about STEM and career opportunities at Berkeley Lab.
Facilitators are needed to work with small teams of students (3-4) to support them through a hands-on STEM activity that will focus on simple circuits and coding using light sensors. The camp also includes tours of Berkeley Lab facilities, career talks with scientists, and workshops both at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. These events will be in both English and Spanish.
A wide range of volunteer roles are available throughout the duration of camp, including document translators, workshop facilitators and workshop translators, application readers, and volunteers to meet and greet students/families as part of the welcoming committee.
Volunteers from all careers at Berkeley Lab are welcome, and there are roles for those who do not know Spanish.
